Last night in Austin, Friends of Texas Public Schools was honored to host Dr. Diane Ravitch, the foremost authority on the destructive effects of high stakes testing and privatization. Diane Ravitch is an outspoken advocate for public education. Dr. Ravitch was the 2014 Friends of Texas Public Schools Friend of the Year honoree, author of Reign of Error and former Undersecretary of Education for George H. W. Bush.
In a capacity crowd full of educators, public education supporters, state representatives; current and former, state board of education members; current and former, and many friends, Dr. Ravitch provided history, data, lessons, and motivation to keep fighting for public education.
Diane Ravitch reminded the audience that “Public Schools play a crucial part in this society.”
Scott Milder, Friends Co-Founder & CEO said “the high stakes testing craze that has been imposed on students and educators by some politicians and testing companies has been cancerous in our system of public education. We are thankful to Diane Ravitch for her unrelenting advocacy for meaningful and appropriate student assessment that is not punitive, but rather complementary to the efforts of gifted educators across Texas.”
Following Dr. Ravtich’s speech, a question and answer discussion with a panel including: Chairman of the House Public Education Committee, Dan Huberty; Vice Chairman of the House Public Education Committee, Diego Bernal; and Member of the House Public Education Committee and former Superintendent, Gary Van Deaver; as well as Diane Ravitch and answered questions from the audience.
