The Truth About Charters: Prioritize Texas Public Schools
As the Texas Legislature reconvenes this month, with public education under scrutiny as a hot-button issue, let’s examine the data surrounding the challenges faced by charter schools in our state.
Nearly 1 in 4 charter schools in Texas fails within their first five years.
By the 10-year mark, the failure rate climbs to 4 in 10 charter schools.
Over the course of 20 years, 55% of Texas charter schools will fail.
Between 2020 and 2022 alone, 55 charter schools closed—many of them abruptly—leaving students and families in difficult situations.
These figures reflect a troubling trend of instability, with Texas charter schools experiencing a 30-34% closure rate overall, according to a new report from the National Center for Charter School Accountability and the Network for Public Education.
In contrast, Texas public schools continue to provide stability, equity, and accountability for all students. Public schools are built to serve every child in our communities, offering a foundation of reliable support and opportunity.
As we move into this legislative session, we must prioritize the investment in Texas public schools.
