A recent poll by Texas-based Perception Insight, commissioned by TASB, sheds light on the overwhelming support for stronger public education funding in Texas. The data presents a clear picture of where Texans stand on key education issues:
77% of Texans believe the state should allocate more resources to public schools, signaling a widespread recognition that our education system needs additional investment to meet the needs of students and educators alike.
Public education ranked as the highest legislative priority, tied only with border security. This indicates that Texans view education as fundamental to the state’s future, directly influencing their views on policy and funding.
89% of respondents support increasing teacher salaries, a clear call for greater recognition and financial support for the individuals who are shaping the future of Texas. Alongside this, 89% favor more funding for school safety, emphasizing the importance of creating secure and supportive learning environments.
When it comes to educational savings accounts (ESAs), or vouchers, a majority of Texans across all regions—urban, rural, and suburban—oppose the use of public funds for private or homeschool tuition. This opposition points to a preference for ensuring that taxpayer dollars remain invested in strengthening the public school system, rather than being diverted to private institutions.
Additionally, 79% of Texans believe that private and religious schools should be required to report performance metrics, such as test results and graduation rates, if they receive taxpayer funding. This highlights a desire for transparency and accountability in how public money is spent, reinforcing the need for equitable standards across all types of schools.
These findings reveal a clear, bipartisan consensus on the need to invest in public education. It’s evident that the majority of Texans view education as a critical issue that transcends political lines and requires immediate action
