The Funding Squeeze on Texas Public Schools!
Texas public schools are facing increasing financial strain due to stagnant state funding. The basic per-student funding rate has remained unchanged at $6,160 since 2019, while inflation continues to rise, impacting school districts' ability to keep up with costs. With teacher and staff salaries making up the largest portion of school budgets, districts are under immense pressure to raise pay, even as the cost of living and operational expenses increase.
For example, districts like Coppell ISD have openly shared that they would need a $1,000-$1,200 increase in the basic allotment just to keep pace with inflation. Sunnyvale ISD, a small Dallas-area district, is facing skyrocketing insurance costs, with premiums rising from $300,000 to over half a million in just a year.
In addition to inflation, schools are grappling with costly security mandates, which have not been fully funded by the state. These challenges further stress already tight budgets and limit districts' ability to meet the needs of students and staff.
As friends and advocates of Texas public schools, it’s essential we continue to raise awareness of these challenges and advocate for equitable funding that keeps pace with rising costs and mandates. Our students, educators, and communities deserve a fully funded education system that ensures success for all.
