What does a school librarian do?

Public school librarians connect to resources that inspire learning. They are educators, tech facilitators, and student advocates.
  • Curate collections that reflect diverse voices and student interests
  • Teach information literacy, digital citizenship, and research skills
  • Lead programs that promote independent reading and critical thinking
  • Collaborate with teachers to support classroom instruction
  • Manage digital resources and assistive technologies

School Librarian Qualifications

School librarians are required to have a graduate degree from a college or university whose program is recognized by the American Library Association (ALA), the American Association of School Librarians (AASL)/Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), or state education agencies. A school librarian's role is a combination of a champion, collaborator, and teacher. The ALA provides a general job description of a school librarian.

Books & Makerspace Opportunities

Harry Potter, Catcher in the Rye, Charlotte's Web, and Hunger Games are just a few of the thousands of iconic books public school libraries provide for students. School librarians know how to curate book lists by grade level. Elementary school books are found by the school librarian, as well as young adult, or YA books, for older students. Young readers can find books listed on Goodreads for Kids and Booklist, as well as graphic novels and recordings. Many Texas ISDs are integrating hands-on learning into their libraries through dedicated makerspace.
  • 3D printers, robotics kits, and STEM building tools
  • Art, design, and crafting supplies for creative expression
  • Audio-visual labs for podcasting, video editing, and digital storytelling
  • Opportunities to collaborate, solve problems, and prototype ideas

Inclusive Spaces & Accessibility Tools

Today's school libraries prioritize accessibility and inclusion. Schools are rethinking their spaces to reflect the needs of all learners. These changes ensure students feel welcome and empowered to explore and learn.
  • Flexible seating and ADA-compliant furniture
  • Sensory-friendly zones and calming areas
  • Genrefied book collections to simplify discovery
  • Visual and spatial layouts that reflect student voice and choice
School libraries offer tools that support all types of learners, including students with disabilities or language differences. By integrating technology, libraries promote equitable learning outcomes.
  • Text-to-speech and speech-to-text apps
  • Digital audiobooks and closed-captioned media
  • Immersive Reader and screen-reading tools
  • C-Pens and other reading assistance devices
